Abstract:

While the world’s energy sources become less based on fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas, two energy forms, hydrogen and electricity, are expected to be the two dominant energy carriers for the provision of end-use energy services, in what is often referred to as a hydrogen economy. In particular, as relatively easily accessible fossil fuel supplies become scarcer or more expensive to harvest and as environmental concerns, especially climate change and the global warming that leads to it, expand and become more concerning, hydrogen is likely to become an increasingly important chemical energy carrier. Hydrogen can be viewed as a hydrocarbon fuel with no carbon, so its utilization does not contribute to climate change. The prospects for renewable energy are enhanced through the use of hydrogen energy systems in which hydrogen is an energy carrier. Thus, hydrogen energy systems allow greater use of renewable energy resources
