Special emphasis in understanding the mechanisms behind the development of multiple sclerosis is placed on immunological markers, particularly cytokines, due to their pivotal role in the processes of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in both acute and chronic stages of the disease. Significant alterations in the proinflammatory cytokine profile have been noted during the progression of the pathology.The objective of this research was to explore the levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα) in blood plasma as well as in brain and spinal cord homogenates during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and its subsequent treatment. The therapeutic agent used in this study was Cronassial, which contains mono-di-tri-sialylgangliosides. The gathered data highlight the neuroprotective effects of Cronassial when administered to animals afflicted with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.
