Chronic respiratory
failure is a condition characterized by the inability of the respiratory system
to adequately meet the body's demand for oxygen and/or eliminate carbon dioxide
over an extended period of time. This can result from various chronic respiratory diseases that progressively impair lung
function. It is often associated with conditions such as chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, neuromuscular disorders, and obesity
hypoventilation syndrome.
