Vaccine Research & Development

Vaccine Research & Development

WHO has initiated a Vaccine Research program aimed at fostering research and development (R&D) to combat economically burdensome diseases, particularly in low and middle income countries and the initiative encompasses diverse efforts:

  • Facilitating early-stage R&D for diseases lacking vaccines or having suboptimal ones.
  • Enhancing public health impact for underutilized existing vaccines.
  • Assisting decision-making for vaccine introduction and assessing risk/benefit post-licensure.
  • Improving monitoring and evaluation of in-use immunization vaccines.
  • Traditionally, vaccine development involved a prolonged stepwise process. However, the urgency of COVID-19 has prompted exceptional financial investments and scientific collaborations that are reshaping vaccine development methodologies, accelerating progress to address immediate global health needs.
